Metal workshop activities

The cooperative's metal workshop continues its activities both producing metalwork and doing repairs for local customers in Estelí and also in support of various activities in support of local communities such as metal frame structures of different kinds and also assisting with solar panel projects and ecological sanitary programmes supported by the foundation.

Youth group visit pioneer of Nicaraguan folk music Felipe Urrutia

On June 23rd a group of young people from Managua visited the foundation for a workshop on the use of video for community activities. They took the opportunity of being in Estelí to visit veteran folk musician Don Felipe Urrutia who lives about 4Km south west of Estelí in the community of El Limón. Felipe, now 94, is also  one of the pioneers of collecting folk music and songs in Nicaragua.

New roof for family in El Espinal

Thanks to help from the Nicaraguan government and the local municipal authority in Estelí, Superemos was able to help the family of Erika Cruz Montengro in the rural community of El Espinal improve their house. Erika is a young woman of 19 with disability whose mother doña Ninfa cares for her full time supported by her adolescent sons and other relatives who live nearby. The house is made of adobe covering a light timber framework. The onset of the rains this year put the integrity of the structure at risk since it is already quite deteriorated.

Mural in honour of Bob Barr

In May, visiting artist Coral Pearce very kindly painted a mural in honor of Bob Barr, founder of the Barr Foundation of Oklahoma, whose moral and financial support, advice and guidance helped Superemos through the years following the foundation of the Estelí Women's School, which was Bob's idea and which he more than anybody made possible.

Outreach educational work by the ISIS program against domestic violence violence

The ISIS program aimed at preventing domestic violence has expanded its educational activities working in various health centres and schools both in Estelí and in outlying communities. Here the team, led in this case by Karen Villareina, holds a workshop with students in the secondary school at Isidrillo to the east of Estelí.

Sones Segovianos - Visit by Director of the Nicaraguan Institute of Culture

In early April, the Director of the Nicaraguan Institute of Culture visited Superemos to evaluate the "Sones Segovianos" music education project. The visit lasted all morning, including a short presentation by the students of the music school led by the school's Director Hannah Curteis.

New roof on main school building

In April we have been able to renew  the rear roof on the main school building. We found that about 40% of the old compressed cement fibre roof sheeting was damaged or deficient, only 30% was in fair condition for possible future use and another 30% was defective but still worth saving.
