Trabajando contra la violencia intrafamiliar

En junio de este año, Fundación Superemos abrió en su local en Estelí un albergue para mujeres y niñ@s víctimas de la violencia intrafamiliar de los departamentos del norte de Nicaragua. Además del albergue, el programa ejecuta programas de visitas a las comunidades rurales y barrios del municipio de Estelí, de educación en temas de desarrollo personal, de género y de capacitación en diversas actividades productivas.

Preventing Domestic Violence

In June this year Superemos opened a women's shelter as part of its program to help prevent domestic violence in communities in Estelí's urban and rural areas. As well as the shelter, the program runs outreach and educational activities. The program is called by its Spanish acronym ISIS - the Systematic Intervention and Social Integration project.

Programme to counter domestic violence

With support from the Dorchester House Multi Service Center of Boston, Superemos has begun a programme to combat domestic violence, a social phenomenon affecting many families in Nicaragua.

The group working on the program are young professionals, Itzal Martínez who is a lawyer, Karen Villareina a psychologist and Roberto Espino who is a social worker. They are assisted by Daysi Flores and Luisa Duarte who are both law graduates and co-founders in 1993 of the first women's refuge in Nicaragua.

Bakery training

Thanks to support from the Managua based Casa Canadiense, the bakery training programme is progressing well with a group of around 20 women participating regularly. In recent classes the participants have learned how to make and decorate cakes. The latest batch they made was quickly snapped up for the Mother's Day celebration in Nicaragua which is held on May 30th.

Music education project - first concert (Part 1)

This video records the first concert given by students of the "Sones Segovianos" music school based in the Superemos project centre in Estelí Nicaragua. Project director Hannah Curteis works with colleagues Alfredo Quintero and Alberto Velasquez teaching music theory and practice to around 100 students from the ages of 5 to 16. Students learn to play the recorder, the guitar, piano, marimba, violin and percussion.
