Haemodialysis patient Daysi Flores inspects |
Donations from friends of Dr. Peter Loewinthan and his colleagues at the Dorchester House Multi Service Center in Boston are helping patients receiving haemodialysis at the regional dialysis centre in Estelí's San Juan de Díos hospital. The donations have made it possible to help the hospital rehabilitate a disused area of the hospital so as to provide overnight accommodation for patients travelling from remote rural areas to receive their weekly haemodialysis in the hospital in Estelí The Estelí regional dialysis unit serves about 18 people a day. Many of the patients come from as far away as Quilalí or San Juan de Rio Coco. Patients from those remote districts have to get to the hospital the day before thier treatment. Prior to the provision of this overnight accommodation those patients had to sleep on benches in the hospital corridors. We are very grateful to our friends in Boston who made this facility possible for local haemodialysis patients. The hospital's budget could not cover the work involved. This small project is a good example of how small organizations can help improve government provision of health services to local people. |
