Improvements to ceramic area

Last week we finished rebuilding the old wood kiln and improving the access to the ceramic workshop. The slope leading down to the workshop past the kiln turns into mud duirng the rainy season. The new steps make for safer access. We rebuilt the kiln so that it is top-loading. This made it possible to fabricate a simple lid lined with fired clay tiles. This is much easier to open and close than the previous side loading arrangement. We also experimented successfully with a refractory mix to lay the bricks for the kiln. 5 parts dirt, 5 parts local stone derived grit, 2 parts lime and one part cement. |

Conservation work on the Superemos site beside River Estelí
Following the effects of the flooding in October last year, we have worked hard to recover the land lost to the river and to take sustainable preventive measures to protect the site from further flood damage in the coming rainy season. Working with the local Natural Resources ministry and the local municipal authority - the Alcaldía - we devised a project to remake the course of the river, reinstate the land washed away, re-fence an area for reforestation, carry out reforestation and natural barriers to promote promotion and retention of soil.The following photographs show progress so far,

In February, paediatricians Dr. Peter Loewinthan and Dr. Joshua Kantrowitz visited Superemos to give clinics for disadvantaged children in northern Nicaragua. Their visit was supported by many people in the US as well as the non-profit organizations Americares and Project Hope who donated valuable amounts of medicines. |
