Visit by Dr. Peter Loewinthan and Dr. Joshua Kantrowitz

In February, paediatricians Dr. Peter Loewinthan and Dr. Joshua Kantrowitz visited Superemos to give clinics for disadvantaged children in northern Nicaragua. Their visit was supported by many people in the US as well as the non-profit organizations Americares and Project Hope who donated valuable amounts of medicines.

 Peter and Josh spent 3 weeks giving clinics in Esteli and in Matagalpa. During their first week they saw children in urban barrios in Esteli and in the rural communities of El Limon and San Pedro. During the second week of their visit they were hosted by Wilma Reyes and her family and colleagues in the Casa de la Mujer (AMNLAE) in Matagalpa where they worked in low income urban barrios.


During their final week they worked in coordination with a team from the main health centre in Esteli visiting rural communities in Rodeo Grande, San Roque, La Montañita and Isiquí. Health Centre director Dr. Jose Angel Pino and his colleagues contributed transport to facilitate  these clinics. Altogether Peter and Joshua saw well over 1200 children during their visit. Most of these children seldom see a paediatrician from one year to the next because public health resources are so limited.
In addition to seeing so many children Peter and Joshua's visit also contributed to important improvements in local public health.

Thanks to Peter Loewinthan's fund raising efforts a piped water project was able to be completed in the rural community of San Pedro which will dramatically improve health conditions for over 2000 people.

Individual patient's also benefited grealty. Thanks to Peter and Joshua's visit we were able to donate a wheelchair to a child with disability whose
family would not have been able to buy one
