Wilson Ordoñez arranges stones from the river in a wire mesh box. The row of stones retained in the wire mesh will protect the retaining wall we have built up over the last two years from further erosion by the river when it is in flood in September and October later this year. The gap you can see underneath the edge of the concrete and stone retaining wall was the result of very heavy rains, unexpectedly so, in the first part of the rainy season that lasts from May until early July. Currently, from mid-July to mid-August, we are in what is known as the canícula, the dog days, which are a dry period lasting for about a month, before the second part of the rainy season - usually much heavier rains than in the first part - begins. So we are taking advantage of the dry spell to protect the results of the hard work we have done in previous years from being damaged. We are very grateful to the local mayor's office for helping us with a donation of about 100 wire mesh boxes which have made this work possible. |
